Evaluation of a new intraorbital implant: preliminary results

PURPOSE: To describe a new orbital implant, with an original shape, the surgical technique adapted for its implantation and preliminary results. METHODS: The authors describe the surgical technique performed in 22 patients, either as primary or secondary implants. The patients were evaluated in a prospective way to cosmesis (degree of upper lid sulcus and enophthalmos), implant mobility, volume and centralization. Follow-up ranged from 3 to 15 months (average 1 year). RESULTS: A good cosmetic result without cases of severe upper lid sulcus or enophthalmos and a good prosthesis mobility were observed. There was no implant infection, migration or extrusion. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the clinical results with the new implant can be compared to the usual coupled ones, but a multicentric study, with longer follow-up is necessary, for a better evaluation of its potential complications.OBJETIVO: Apresentar novo tipo de implante orbitário, com formato original, o modo de utilização e os resultados clínicos preliminares. MÉTODOS: Os autores descrevem a técnica cirúrgica utilizada para a inserção do novo implante em 22 pacientes, como implante primário ou secundário. Os pacientes foram avaliados de forma prospectiva quanto aos seguintes aspectos: cosmético (grau de sulco suprapalpebral e enoftalmia), mobilidade, centragem e volume do implante. O tempo de seguimento variou de 3 a 15 meses (média 1 ano). RESULTADOS: Observou-se resultado cosmético satisfatório, sem casos de enoftalmia ou de sulco suprapalpebral importante, bem como boa mobilidade das próteses adaptadas sobre o novo implante. Não houve casos de infecção, migração ou extrusão do implante. CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados pós-operatórios com o novo implante são comparáveis aos implantes com pinos externos. O Observatório Astronómico da Escola Politécnica : modelos virtuais para a sua preservação

O último observatório de ensino de interesse histórico em Portugal, que data do final do século XIX, é um dos edifícios mais carismáticos dos Museus da Universidade de Lisboa. Após um século de uso intensivo, o Observatório Astronómico da Escola Politécnica necessita de obras estruturais antes de ser devolvido integralmente à fruição pública. Recentemente, um grupo de estudantes desta Universidade foi envolvido na construção de modelos 3D virtuais para recriar o edifício do Observatório e alguns objetos das suas coleções. A qualidade dos modelos potencia a sua utilização como instrumento de divulgação de uma peça relevante do património histórico-científico da Universidade de Lisboa. Este artigo descreve as várias abordagens adoptadas e compara-as entre si.The Astronomical Observatory of the Lisbon Polytechnic School is the last teaching observatory of historical interest in Portugal. Created in the late nineteenth century, it survives intact in its original design. Given its singularity in the context of scientific heritage, the quality and beauty of its architecture, as well as its privileged location in the Botanical Garden, the Observatory has the potential to become the Museum’s focal point for the promotion of astronomy and its history. After 100 years of intense use, however, the Observatory is highly degraded and needs structural restoration before it can be fully returned to public fruition. Recently, three professors of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon decided to involve a group of students in the construction of virtual 3D models to recreate the Observatory building and collections. Influence of distance and illumination on detection of marks in augmented reality applied to transcranial magnetic stimulation

O estudo foi levado a cabo durante o desenvolvimento de uma aplicação móvel de Realidade Aumentada que representa modelos virtuais 3D do cérebro de um paciente sobre a imagem real da sua cabeça. O objetivo principal da aplicação é guiar os médicos no uso de uma terapia médica não invasiva, designada por Estimulação Magnética Transcraniana, que utiliza estímulos eletromagnéticos para tratar problemas neurológicos. O rastreio destas marcas provou ser um dos desafios principais da aplicação implementada e observámos que as condições luminosas e a distância às marcas são dois dos fatores principais que podem influenciar a sua deteção com precisão.The study was carried out while developing an Augmented Reality mobile application that represents 3D virtual models of the brain of a patient over the real image of the patient’s head. The main purpose of the application is to guide doctors during a non-invasive medical procedure called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation that uses electromagnetic stimulation to treat neurological problems. The tracking of these markers have proven to be one of the more challenging components of such an application and we observe that lighting conditions and distance to the markers are two of the main factors that can influence their accurate recognition.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The text presents a balance of the História Unisinos for the quadrennium 2013-2016, in order to establish a diagnosis of the situation of the Journal in the period. Among the constructed data, we can list: number of published manuscripts and their provenance; institutional links of authors; average times of submission, acceptance and publication, and index of endogeny. Along with this survey, relevant information is brought to cover the recent changes in its editorial policy, in view of the current challenges posed by the scientific publication system in the country, as well as compliance with the guidelines established by the History department of CAPES in last years. Este artigo tem por objetivo retomar características históricas da gestão escolar a fim de demonstrar suas transformações de acordo com os contextos e épocas diferentes. Analisar questões fundamentais no contexto da gestão escolar e os novos desafios a ela implicados, em virtude das novas demandas que a escola enfrenta no contexto de uma sociedade que se democratiza e se transforma. Numa época em que o mundo passa por grandes e rápidas mudanças, são exigidas novas posturas; diante disso, o papel do gestor escolar é fundamental, e dele são exigidos novos conhecimentos, atenções e habilidades. Assim, ainda que a pesquisa se respalde em um estudo teórico-bibliográfico, busca entender por que, em muitos casos, o gestor não consegue transpor para a prática o que já está em seu discurso; investigar a origem histórica da função do diretor; entender a especificidade atual dessa atuação profissional e suas principais atribuições

Evaluation of Brazilian online pharmacies

The growing number of Internet users brought forth an increase in the search for Brazilian online pharmacy services. Aiming at evaluating the validity of information disseminated in these websites, a descriptive study was carried out in 18 virtual pharmacies concerning legal aspects, accessibility, sources of information and drug advertisings. It was found 15 pharmacies did not have authorization of the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency; the manager pharmaceutical officer's name could not be found in 17 of them; 17 pharmacies marketed drugs with no registration, especially herbal medicines, and did not show either information on adverse drug reactions or this agency's alerts and health recommendations. Since health control and drug commerce in Brazilian online pharmacies have not been yet regulated by proper government agencies, these gaps found in the sites can pose risk to the users' health.O crescente número de usuários de internet desencadeou um aumento na busca dos serviços de farmácias virtuais brasileiras. Com o objetivo de avaliar a validade das informações divulgadas nesses sites, realizou-se estudo descritivo com 18 farmácias virtuais quanto aos aspectos legais, acessibilidade, fontes de informação e propagandas de medicamentos. Verificou-se que 15 não possuíam autorização de funcionamento da Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária; 17 não tinham o nome do farmacêutico responsável pelo funcionamento; 17 comercializavam medicamentos sem registro, especialmente fitoterápicos, e não dispunham de informações sobre reações adversas a medicamentos e nem exibiam alertas e recomendações sanitárias determinadas por essa Agência. Como o controle sanitário e o comércio de medicamentos nas farmácias virtuais brasileiras ainda não estão regulamentados pelos órgãos governamentais competentes, essas falhas encontradas nos sites podem colocar em risco a saúde de seus usuários

Modulation of gene expression by essential oils in bacteria

The emerging of drug-resistant strains imposes some new strategies in prevent bacteria spread. It is pivotal to find new candidates for drug development. The essential oils (EOs) extracted from plants are alternatives for it, since they have a variety of cellular target. However, evaluate the efficacy of EOs against bacteria Gram positive and Gram negative, as well as, the toxicity for mammary cell is needed. VIRTUAL CITIES INHABITED BY AUTONOMOUS CHARACTERS: A PIPELINE FOR THEIR PRODUCTION

[EN] Creating 3D reconstruction of the past is a challenging task requiring a vast set of technical skills, with teams usually including historians, 3D artists and IT technicians. In this paper, we describe our combined efforts to work under a low-budget pipeline to make a 3D simulation of the medieval village of Mértola in the south of Portugal. The work we describe in this paper is part of a larger project called "BIHC - Bio- Inspired Human Crowds" whose partial objectives are the development of a set of tools for the animation of 3D reconstructions of cultural heritage sites. We have focused on developing a lightweight model of the village that would allow the incorporation of virtual autonomous inhabitants in a simulation running in real-time and visitable by online audiences in both i) bird’s-eye and ii) first-person points of view.
